Viola Lassiter, 97, of Rochester, formerly of Freedom, passed away Saturday, November 12, 2016, in Providence Health Care Center, Beaver Falls. Born June 6, 1919, in Americus, Ga., a daughter of the late Reed Sr. and Jane Lee Hayes Hoston, she was a housewife and homemaker. She was a member of the Second Baptist Church, Rochester, and was a former member of Mount Olive Baptist Church, Aliquippa, where she was a former choir member and deaconess. She was preceded in death by her husband, James L. Lassiter, in 2005; five sisters, Mattie Scretchens, Jessie B. McGrady, Anna Mae Lewis, Henrietta Whitsone and Jane Lee Archie, and five brothers, Reed Hoston Jr., John "Bud" Hoston, Lee Arthur Hoston, Willie C. Hoston and Arthur Lee Hoston. Surviving are seven daughters and two sons-in-law, Vera M. and Daniel Brantley, Springfield, Mass.; Jessie B. Lassiter, Rochester; Ruby Geane Anderson, New Brighton; Ernestine Williams, Baden; Minnie Mae Gaulden, Monaca; Gaynell Nealy, Las Vegas, Nev., and Dorothy Geane and Craig Woody, Manassas, Va.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, James L. and Patricia Lassiter, Rochester, and Cicero Lassiter, Rochester; 16 grandchildren, Patricia, Charles, Anthony, Keith, Tamyka, Christy, Danyell, Laveda, Christine, Patina, Erica, Roleta, Kyra, Lindsey, Craig and Constance "Cookie" Vreen; 29 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends will be received Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. in the WILLIAM MURPHY FUNERAL HOME INC., 349 Adams St., Rochester, and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the Second Baptist Church, Rochester, where a service will be held at 11 a.m. The Rev. Robert Jones will officiate. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, Freedom. The family wishes memorial contributions be made, if desired, to Feed the Children, P.O. Box 36, Oklahoma City, OK 73101-0036. The family would like to thank the staff of the Providence Health Care Center for their kind and compassionate care given to their mother.
