Guy J. Grater, 81, of Monaca, passed away on January 29,2021, in Good Samaritan Hospice of Beaver. He was born May 25, 1939 in Rochester. He was son of the late Guy I. and Anna M. Mourot Grater. Guy was a retired employee of the former B&W Steel Corporation and Standard Steel Company, Beaver Falls and formerly employed by Standard Horsenail Company, New Brighton. Guy completed his apprenticeship with J&L Steel, Aliquippa as a journeyman machinist first class, after graduating in 1957 from Monaca High School. After retiring from the steel industries in 1994, he worked part time for Kirk Livery Service Pittsburgh, and the William Murphy Funeral Home Inc., Rochester. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Parish of Monaca, where he served on Parish council and as a lector. He was a member, secretary and past King Lion for the former Monaca Lions Club. Guy was an umpire for many years with the W.P.I.A.L. and the P.I.A.A. girls softball leagues and the A.S.A. Men's Softball League. He was a referee for high school basketball and a time keeper for the Monaca Indians football and basketball games. He was a social member of the Monaca American Legion Post #580 and the Monaca Coronet Band Room. Guy was an inductee and member of the Monaca Community Hall of Fame and a member of the Monaca Fall Fest program and also organized the Monaca Halloween Parade. Guy is survived by his wife of 59 years, Barbara A. (Gecina) Grater. He is also survived by one daughter, Barbara G. Nelson, Monaca, two sons and daughters in law, Mark A. Grater, West Palm Beach, Florida, and Gary M. Grater and wife, Amanda of Monaca and Cindy Truax Grater of St. Leonard, Maryland. Five granddaughter's, Kristen Grater Donohue and her husband Ryan, Emily Nelson, Taylor Nelson, Aubrey and Avery Grater, two brothers in law, Frank Gecina and wife Sylvia of Corvalis, Oregon, and Anthony Gecina and wife Cindy of Monaca, one niece, Dr. Laura Gecina and husband Andrew Chang, State College, Pa. Guy was preceded in death by one son, Guy F. Grater, 2016. Due to Covid-19 restrictions the family wishes to have a private wake and blessing service Tuesday afternoon in the William Murphy Funeral Home, Inc. Entombment will be in Sylvania Hills Mausoleum. Family wishes memorial contributions be made to honor his commitment to community service due to the covid 19 situations occuring.
