George E. Tannehill, 96, of the Masonic Village, Aleppo Twp., passed away Wednesday, July 11, 2018, in the Masonic Village. Born February 18, 1922, in Rochester, a son of the late George W. and Nora Morrison Tannehill, he was a retired comptroller with the former Koppers Corp., Pittsburgh office. He was a member of the Faith Community United Methodist Church, where he had served as a lay leader on the Pastor Parish Committee, on the Finance Committee and represented the church at the annual Methodist Synod Conference. He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran, having served with the 463rd Heavy Bomb Group in Italy. He also received nine Bronze Stars and battle awards for campaigns in the Air Offensive of Europe, the Arno Area, Rome, Italy, Normandy, Northern and Southern France, the Rhineland, Germany, the Northern Apennines, the Po Valley and Air Offensive of the Balkans. He received several decorations and citations including Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge with Oak Leaf Clusters, the European-African Middle East Service Medal, U.S. Air Defense Medal and then retired from the U.S. Air Force Reserve on July 1, 1968 as a Major and Executive Officer with the 911th Troop Carrier Wing, Greater Pittsburgh Airport. He was a 1940 graduate of Rochester High School and a 1946 graduate of Geneva College, receiving his BS degree in Business Administration, and then received his MBA from the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Business. He was the recipient of the Life “G” Alumni Award. He was a member of the Rochester American Legion Post 498; a 50-year member of the Rochester Lodge 229 F&AM, and a member of the Syria Shrine, New Castle Consistory of Scottish Rite and the Consistory Legion of Honor, New Castle. He was also a member of the AARP. He served on the board of directors of Jersey Settlement Cemetery for 30 years and served 15 years on the board of Asbury Heights (Methodist) Retirement Home, Mount Lebanon, Pa., and three years as its president. Through his work with Koppers from 1958 to 1967, he served on assignment in Chile, Columbia, Brazil, Venezuela, Egypt, Turkey, Philippines and Australia, where he had been in charge of the construction cost comptroller for engineering and construction. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly Walley Tannehill, in 2013; a sister, Eunice L. Snow, in 1988, and a good friend, Eileen Paul. Surviving are a cousin, Attorney J.P. Ball, Park City, Utah, and close friends, Dennis and Dorothy Hawkins, Edgeworth, and Rev. Dr. John “Jack” White, PhD, and his wife, Mary E., Chippewa Twp. Friends will be received Friday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in WILLIAM MURPHY FUNERAL HOME INC., 349 Adams St., Rochester, with a service following. His pastor, Rev. Dr. Donald Dotterer, will officiate, and the Rev. Dr. John White will assist. Interment will be in Jersey Settlement Cemetery, Somerset County. The family wishes memorial contributions be made to the Perpetual Foundation Endowment of the Faith Community United Methodist Church, 339 Jefferson St., Rochester, PA 15074.
